An Story of Surprising Kindness: When a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground
During the year 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I assumed to arrange lodging after getting there, yet when I arrived, a big convention was happening and all the youth hostels and affordable lodging had no vacancies.
Hailing from Singapore, I thought the possibility of spend the night at the airport – only to discover the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, does not operate around the clock. Unsure of what my next move should be and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on a city-bound bus and found myself drifting towards a gaming venue, reasoning I could pass the night in a place operating all night. Admittedly, this plan at my peak for acing a crucial interview the next morning, yet, as a broke student, I couldn’t afford.
Our society requires more people like that woman.
Apparently, I appeared confused because a woman spotted me loitering in the city and asked if I was OK. I explained my situation and immediately she offered I could crash on the floor at her university residence at the Australian National University – a perfect solution, given that my the important interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided a meal: a leftover sandwiches she brought back her part-time job. I was able to use a hot shower and a protected spot and safe to sleep.
With hindsight, it’s clear to me what a big chance she took as a young woman allowing a man she’d just met crash at her place. Back then I existed within my male privilege bubble and did not consider about things like that. Now, as a father, it astounds me she offered that help – and remain very grateful.
Ultimately, I did not attending ANU, and I never saw that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of human compassion. My sincere desire is that karma has rewarded her act of kindness abundantly. Our society requires more individuals who show such kindness.
