Battlefield 6's Casual Game Mode Ignites Heated Debates Over AI Players, XP Rewards, and Wait Times

Recently, the game developers introduced a fresh game mode titled Relaxed Breakthrough. In essence, this mode resembles the standard Breakthrough format but includes several notable adjustments:

  • Every squad includes only 8 real players, with the remaining made up of 32 bots.
  • Actions done by human gamers grant full XP, while bot actions offer reduced XP.
  • Just a pair of maps can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State.
  • Features like Dogtags, achievements, and stat tracking are disabled.

So essentially, the playlist delivers on its name: it's a casual take of Breakthrough. At face value, one could assume it's a good idea, since it provides additional choices for players seeking different ways to enjoy the game. But, if video games has shown one thing, it is that not everyone will be happy. Which is to say, many BF6 players are mad.

Player Responses: Anger to Praise

"Gamers prefer human opponents. Don't repeat the errors of your competitors," states one reply to the official announcement. "Absolutely shocking idea," comments another. At the same time, in community forums, one user notes, "It's unclear where we are headed with this game," while another details everything they consider to be problematic in the game: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We do not require this AI-heavy playlist."

On the other hand, for every complaint, some gamers explaining how much they're liking the recent addition. "It's enjoyable to warm up, human participants keep it from being a total farmfest but it's quite laid-back," says a forum post. "This subreddit fails to see that there are gamers who actually go outside and don't play this title all the time. Allow them to strike a balance," states a different comment. One reply via social media explains that as they're "a parent gamer with limited time, this is great for me," and another praises the mode for "avoiding intense competition."

Valid Concerns and Community Input

All that said, players have valid points to complain about Casual Breakthrough. Some users have pointed out that it could increase wait times even longer for other modes because of the large amount of playlists currently available. Similarly, some areas already encounter AI-filled matches in the existing playlists. Additionally, it appears a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a required amount of real players, despite it focuses mostly on combat against bots.

Lastly, one of the biggest grievances is that a previous feature was meant to provide complete rewards, even against bots, but that was removed when they attempted to eliminate XP farming from the system. Thus Casual Breakthrough seems like the community compromising halfway, as per a Reddit comment. A different user labels this mode as the developers "making a mistake significantly, I had so much fun in the first couple of days, what prompted them to change it?"

Looking Ahead: Will Changes Occur?

If Battlefield Studios has proven anything to date with the latest installment, it's that they're listening and responding to player input. Assignments being too difficult got fixed very quickly, as did the required Redsec challenges. Chances are that, should analytics indicates this recent mode isn't performing to their standards, they will not hesitate to make further modifications.
