The original creators behind the famous ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch of an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.

The entrepreneur, who established the company alongside his partner, revealed that he plans to personally create the controversial flavor within an individual series highlighting issues the company has been prevented from speaking out about.

Longstanding Dispute Involving Founders and Corporate Owner

The recent announcement intensifies the continuing conflict among the world-famous dessert company and Unilever, the British packaged goods giant that has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.

Both founders have asserted how Unilever and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company against "maintaining its activist principles".

The Fruit Sorbet as an Emblem for Solidarity

Mr. Cohen revealed through social media how he is creating a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas for naming options plus additional components.

“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen stated from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”

The watermelon has become a symbol of support for the Palestinian people due to its colors, which closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Previous Activism plus Current Developments

Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in territories occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever selling their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales within disputed territories.

The new dessert series will be created through Ben's Best, the activist dessert company that was first created in 2016 to support former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".

Leadership Shifts and Upcoming Plans

Mr. Cohen indicated that he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which the company was silenced from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.

This development follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at the company in September, following decades of involvement, mentioning worries regarding how the company's autonomy was compromised after Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.

At that time, Ben Cohen remarked how “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can actualise the social mission, the values that established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
