British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her US tour after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
