Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials expressed anger after the ex-president accused a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and stated they should be arrested and sentenced "with execution" following their publication of a disputed video.

The Recording That Provoked the Controversy

The video footage, shared on Tuesday, features six Democratic lawmakers who previously served in defense or defense roles.

"As we did, you all took an pledge to protect and defend this national charter," the lawmakers declared in the brief video. "And right now, the threats to our governing document aren't just from overseas, but from right here at home. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can reject unlawful commands, you can refuse improper directives, you should decline unlawful commands. No one has to follow orders that contravene the law or our founding principles."

Donald Trump's Angry Reaction

The video message seemed to prompt a furious reaction from the former president.

On the following morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another post, he declared: "This constitutes really serious, and Risky to our Nation. Their words cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Officials React

Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats released a unified declaration denouncing the remarks.

"Political violence has no position in America," they stated. "Congress members who participated in the video all worked our United States with tremendous loyalty and excellence. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's offensive and risky threats of violence against congressional representatives, and appeal to House Republicans to strongly do the same."

The opposition officials also said that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to ensure the security of these officials and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must without delay delete these extreme social media posts and recant his violent discourse before he gets someone killed," the statement added.

Officials' Defiant Reaction

The officials who participated in the video also published a response.

"We serve as ex-military personnel and security experts who love this nation and took an pledge to safeguard and defend the constitution of the United States," they said. "Our pledge continues forever, and we plan to maintain it. No warning, intimidation, or call for violence will deter us from that important obligation."

"What's most telling is that the ex-president views it liable to punishment by death for us to repeat the legal requirements," they continued. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their backs as they fulfill their oath to the founding principles and responsibility to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They stated: "The entire nation must come together and censure the former president's calls for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a moment for ethical certainty."

More Political Comments

The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's statements and published on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the death of government members."

He stated: "This is an outright THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should condemn this without delay and without qualification."

The Republican House speaker defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "It is very risky, you have important representatives of the government instructing soldiers to disobey orders, I think that is unprecedented in the nation's past."

The GOP official also according to sources told journalists that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the crime of sedition" but that "attorneys have to examine the terminology and establish all that."

Executive Branch Response

During a White House press conference on later that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Is the president want to execute members of Congress?", the White House press secretary replied: "Absolutely not."

"Let's be clear about what the former president is addressing," the representative declared. "We see current representatives of the US Congress who worked together to organize a recorded statement to members of the national defense, to current military personnel advising them to defy the president's proper directives."

She said: "The purity of our military relies on the chain of command, and if that structure is broken, it can lead to people getting killed, it can cause confusion, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are basically encouraging."
