Emerging Trump Doctrine Identifies Europe's Core Issue: An Alleged Lack of Racism?

Throughout his first term, commentators frequently advised that Donald Trump's remarks should be taken seriously rather than literally. Yet, real-world experience indicate that this approach may have got it backwards.

A recently unveiled U.S. National Security Strategy coupled with a series of comments from U.S. figures, Trump proxies, and Trump himself have precipitated potentially one of the most profound crises for transatlantic unity, the security framework that has sustained stability and freedom in Europe since 1945.

From Financial Contributions to Civilizational Fear

While The initial critique centered on Europe's perceived refusal to pay for its own security, his rhetoric has now embraced a significantly more disturbing perspective.

Tinged with racism and a staggering contempt for Europe's governing bodies and elected leaders, he has issued warnings about the risk of civilizational erosion on a continent he has rarely visited and has predominantly viewed from a distance.

"A lengthy discussion devoid of a consistent philosophy is instead replete with another element: the muddled anxiety of an ageing white man confronted with demographic shifts."

A conspiratorial Maga perspective, which has already influenced contentious U.S. immigration and law enforcement approaches, now appears to be informing Washington's understanding of Europe.

The Racist Core

From this vantage point, immigration from developing nations causes a cultural dilution of European countries, rendering them "feeble" under "stupid" leadership and setting the stage for their eventual decline. It constitutes an openly xenophobic ideology, with Trump and his circle explicitly endorsing far-right movements across Europe.

While the broader theme of this race-baiting is not new, its specific implications for the continent's defense are critically important.

In the view of the president and his Maga acolytes—including billionaire Elon Musk, who has called for the dissolution of the EU—all politics is inherently transactional. However, while the previous argument was about financial fairness, the new claim is that a decadent Europe is fundamentally unworthy because of its embrace of diversity.

Weakening from Within

During the conversation, Trump joins these ideas in a form of rhetorical loop. He acknowledges that Russia's Vladimir Putin desires a weak Europe. Trump proclaims Europe to be weak, and in exposing the fissures between Washington and European capitals, he inadvertently aids Putin by further weakening European cohesion—while simultaneously denying any responsibility.

This dynamic is playing out at possibly the most critical juncture for Europe in decades, with a brutal conflict in Ukraine and escalating provocations elsewhere on the continent.

While Europe cleaves ever tighter to Kyiv facing persistent threats of American abandonment, the peril is that Trump has rationalized a rationale for not listening to his allies.

The European Response

These developments demands a robust reaction from European leadership. Although certain leaders, such as Germany's leader, have been forceful in their pushback, including the office of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer—have continued with a policy of attempting to appease the U.S. administration.

Recently, the UK government refused to push back on Trump's comments about Europe or his renewed attack on London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

They said, "He enjoys a strong relationship with the U.S. president and a strong relationship with the Mayor of London, and is focused on working with both to deliver better outcomes for the people."

The stark reality is that Trump means his words and says them consistently. It is past time to stop pretending that things are different.
