Eurovision Was Once a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Become a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.
A freshly coined term emerged several months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is unique to Gaza, according to medical experts such as paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is rare for physicians to care for a minor who has been bereaved of their whole family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of child amputees exceeds that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in many doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being systematically aimed at.
An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire
Conditions in Gaza persist as hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that genocidal acts are continuing. Authorities disputes these accusations, just as it disavows all charges it is implicated in. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, apparently, is what unity looks like.
The contest, notably excluded Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems treated differently.
A Double Standard
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that global media are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering
The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of someone in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. A competition that initially championed harmony has now become a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
