Explosions and Low-Flying Jets Reported in Venezuelan Capital Caracas City

Witness testimonies surfaced of multiple explosions and the noise of low-flying planes in Caracas in the early hours of Saturday morning. This situation has led to claims from Venezuela's leadership and calls for global intervention.

Venezuela Accuses United States of Attack

The socialist regime has blamed the United States of committing "imperial aggression," claiming that former President Trump supposedly directed attacks against the Latin American nation. In an public statement, the government stated that strikes had hit Caracas and several other regions: Miranda, La Guaira, and Aragua state.

"The sole aim of this attack is to take control of our nation's key assets, notably its petroleum and mineral wealth," the government said.

Venezuelan officials called on the world to denounce the actions, which it labeled a "blatant breach of international law" that endangered millions of lives in jeopardy.

Accounts of Explosions and Military Installations Hit

Eyewitnesses reported feeling roughly several explosions around 2:00 AM local time. Citizens in various areas allegedly hurried into the open.

"The earth trembled. This is horrible. We experienced explosions and aircraft in the sky," stated one local.

Plumes of smoke was observed pouring from major defense sites in Caracas: the La Carlota air base and the Fuerte Tiuna compound, where president Nicolás Maduro is believed to live.

Global Response

The president of bordering Colombia, Gustavo Petro, stated on X that "Currently they are striking Caracas... bombing it with rockets." He called for an immediate meeting of the Security Council.

Colombia, which just became a member of the Security Council, said it would activate operational measures at its border with its neighbor.

Context

The reported strikes are preceded by a extended pressure campaign by the United States against the Maduro administration. Beginning in last summer, there has been a major American military buildup off Venezuela's northern coast and a number of airstrikes on vessels suspected of illegal activities.

Venezuela's government has stated "the implementation of emergency" and ordered all national defense measures to be implemented. It has also summoned its citizens to protest and "denounce this foreign act."
