Ghostface OG Star the Actor Fears He Could Spoil the Franchise with Scream 7.
The long-awaited slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a major gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment marks the legendary return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the previous film. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.
"Coming back to a role you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a daunting task that kept me up at night," the actor admits.
A Triumphant Return for Fallen Favorites
Reports have confirmed that three different characters from past films are slated to reappear in this new outing, despite meeting their demise in previous installments. The exact mechanism of their return remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the endearing and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first time since a small appearance is a long-held wish, though he is apprehensive about the audience response. The actor vividly recalls the exact moment he received the offer from the series creator.
"I recall the conversation. I remember the small talk. I remember him asking. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he states. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the decades since the original film premiered, which made Lillard feeling quite nervous.
"The reality is, that's a role that lives in infamy, like it or not," he explains. "A character that is now represented in every single Ghostface mask that walks around every October 31st."
The Fear of Disappointing the Fandom
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling immense pressure about not wanting to be the one who damages the beloved series.
"The outcome is either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I have no idea if the film will be successful. I don't know if people want to see me. I've certainly seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the franchise. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Run High
While many dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's reappearance, the central mystery of how he and the others come back remains. Perhaps they exist as manifestations in Sidney's mind, similar to a previous plot device. Alternatively, perhaps they are somehow all alive in a strange communal scenario. The possibility of a meta-horror story, inspired by earlier horror movies, also exists.
Audiences will discover the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
