People have assembled throughout the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-conducted offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The attack led to over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the World War II.

Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The aggressive enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.

He also promised to "realize all the objectives of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a risk to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The government authorities postponed official memorials until October 16th - after the end of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred across the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was aired on Israeli broadcast stations.

A period earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations met in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of mediated discussions to review the provisions of the agreement.

A prominent representative involved in the negotiations said that an night meeting of indirect talks commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative explained the morning session ended without concrete outcomes, amid disagreements over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence combat after the initial stage of the deal.

He noted that the negotiations are "challenging and have still not achieve any major advancement," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to reduce the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Key Matters in Discussions

  • A permanent truce
  • The trade of the hostages still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for relief supplies distribution
  • Post-war governance of the region

Public Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother endured the assault on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were murdered and many more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - told: "No place appears as home anymore and until all the hostages are released no one will be secure."

"Once we see everyone home returned, we can relax again. Then we can commence heal," she concluded.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to show their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel says 48 stay in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be living.

Demonstrator a participant explained: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement required for the captives to be released. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."

Surveys now consistently show that about 70% of Israeli citizens desire the hostilities to conclude in exchange for the release of the captives.

Gaza Situation

At the area of Nova festival, mourners came together to remember the victims.

From that location, the sound of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people said the heavy Israeli attacks persisted.

In the main city, bombardments were reported in the morning of Tuesday in the western district, area and locality districts and in the east side district of the community, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"As the evening arrives, the anxiety arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing earlier, shared.

"My family are afraid of the bombings. All the night we are lying together, clinging, especially my little child who places his face on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we monitor the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the war will return to us."

Medical Emergency

The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had accepted the corpses of several people by the daytime, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part district.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of the city reported additional dead people had been delivered. A person was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for assistance to the south, health workers reported.

The territory's health ministry reported a significant number of the {territ
