Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “But I will say this, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police released surveillance images Monday of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries were reported.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

He signed with New York as a new signing in March and was expected to be an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in March.
