Weather experts are saying an icy start to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are advised to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Continue Amid Forecasts

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay festivities are planned to go ahead, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be essential," said the national forecaster.

Celebrations Under Clear but Frosty Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and open skies. The mercury are due to be low, so additional clothing a necessity, said forecasters.

Further north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Broad Snow Warnings for Friday

Heading into Friday, advisories are in place for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• Travel is expected to be impacted.
• People are advised to allow extra time for travel on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are likely on the transport network.

Readings Set to Plummet Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to batter the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Health Advisories Issued

At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities explained this signified the weather was expected to cause notable consequences across medical and care provision. This includes a potential rise in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.

The advice for all is clear: to welcome the new year in security, preparing for winter conditions is absolutely paramount.
