A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled persistent concerns over safety standards.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
