The first new treatments for gonorrhoea in decades are being described as a "significant breakthrough" in the battle against superbug strains of the pathogen, according to health experts.

A Global Health Concern

The sexually transmitted infection are on the rise worldwide, with data suggesting in excess of 82 million instances annually. Two New Drugs Secure Authorization

Zoliflodacin, alternatively called Nuzolvence, was cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration in mid-December for treating gonorrhoea. This STI can lead to major issues, including infertility. Scientists hope that focused deployment of this new drug will help hinder the spread of drug resistance.

Another new antibiotic, created by the pharmaceutical company GSK, also received approval in the same week. This medication, which is additionally indicated for urinary tract infections, was proven in research to be effective against antibiotic-resistant forms of the gonorrhoea bacteria.

Zoliflodacin stemmed from a new, not-for-profit approach for medication research. The charitable organization Global Antibiotic Research & Development Partnership worked alongside the pharmaceutical company Innoviva to bring it to fruition.

As per data published in a prominent scientific publication, zoliflodacin cured more than 90% of cases of the STI. The study enrolled hundreds of participants from multiple nations including the United States, Thailand, South Africa, and European nations.

As part of the agreement of its development partnership, GARDP has the authority to make available and distribute the drug in many developing nations.
