Taliban Used Abandoned UK Gear to Locate Local Nationals That Served Alongside Allied Troops, Investigation Learns
An informant has told an official investigation that British authorities left behind sensitive devices enabling the militant group to locate local individuals who collaborated with international military.
Data Breach Puts Thousands at Risk
The whistleblower, identified as Person A, stated that Afghans affected by the security lapse were advised to move homes and alter their contact details to ensure their safety from militant forces.
Lawmakers are looking into the Conservative government's response of a catastrophic breach of private information involving approximately 19k individuals who had asked to relocate to Britain to escape the Taliban.
How the Leak Happened
An electronic document with their personal data, such as identities, addresses and sometimes relative details, was mistakenly released by a worker stationed at British military command in February 2022.
The incident became known only in August 2023, when the names of nine people who had applied to settle in Britain were posted on Facebook.

Consequences of the Data Breach
Initial findings submitted to the inquiry estimated that no fewer than forty-nine kin and colleagues of individuals impacted by the leak had been murdered.
A legal restriction regarding the breach was enacted in last year and blocked all details concerning it from public disclosure until July 2025.
Security Recommendations
Due to legal constraints, the source and the non-governmental organization associated with advised individuals at risk they were assisting that they had “apprehensions that mobile communications had been intercepted”.
“We recommended that they relocate if they could and changed their mobile numbers. That constituted the primary information that, if the Taliban acquired these details, would cause identification and capture,” she said.
Challenged Assessments
The source disputed that government assessment carried out by a retired civil servant had been incorrect to state that the acquisition of the records by militant forces was “not significantly alter current risk levels”.

She detailed disturbing violence endured by affected individuals, involving electrocution, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.
“There are cases of young kids who have had limbs fractured to pressure households to disclose hiding places,” Person A stated.
