The English Team to Begin Euro 2028 Campaign at the Etihad Stadium
England’s men’s team will initiate their 2028 European Championship campaign at the Etihad Stadium, assuming they secure the anticipated passage for a tournament staged throughout most of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
City’s stadium has not welcomed an English men’s fixture since May 2016, when the visitors were defeated 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is highly likely to welcome the national team for their first match on Saturday 10 June 2028.
England are planned to play their final two group matches at the national stadium, but, if they top their group, their last-16 tie would occur at St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean starting the elimination stage at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Championship Kickoff and Rally
The event was unveiled at an gathering in a London landmark on Wednesday evening. Senior figures from the tournament organizers and the host FAs were barracked as they entered the venue by around fifty pro-Palestine demonstrators, who called for Israel’s national side to be expelled from global football because of the Gaza crisis.
Banners were displayed with slogans stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters called out: “Kick Israel out.”
Event Fixture List
The inaugural fixture of the European Championship will be played at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital, on Friday 9 June, a match that will feature the Dragons if they make it.
Wembley Stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the championship match, which will be staged on July 9, 2028 with a commencement at late afternoon.
It is expected that an earlier kick-off, which will also be implemented for Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will attract households and help engage a broader range of viewers.
Qualifying Teams
The Irish team are scheduled to play their opening match at the Aviva Stadium and the Tartan Army would play similarly at Hampden Park.
All four host countries’ teams will enter the preliminary stage; two automatic spots will be held in reserve for any that fail to qualify for Euro 2028 through the qualification path.
Stadiums and Knockout Stage
Villa Park and The North London arena round out the event’s nine venues. Every stadium will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarterfinal matches staged at the national stadium of each host.
The qualifying draw will be conducted in Belfast, which was removed as a tournament location last year when it emerged the proposed venue could not be redeveloped in time, on December 6, 2026.
Official Statement
“It will be a championship for the followers and a showcase of everything we cherish about the football – its fervor and ability to foster unity.”
Over 3 million tickets, a record for a UEFA European Championship, are expected to be released to supporters.
