The network's Premier New Show of 2025 Secures a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family navigate their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
